What is Hepatitis?
Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Inflammation, which is tissue’s reaction to irritation or injury, typically causes pain, redness, and swelling. While many things can cause hepatitis, it is often due to a viral infection which is transmitted through sex, making it an STD. Viral hepatitis infections can be either acute (meaning it lasts for less than 6 months) or chronic (lasting longer than 6 months).
What are the Types of Hepatitis?
There are several viruses which are known to cause hepatitis. We offer to test for the three most common forms of hepatitis:
- Hepatitis A: Commonly acquired by consuming something exposed to feces or through sex, hepatitis A is a highly contagious type of hepatitis which causes a mild illness. Hepatitis A rarely has any complications. Symptoms of Hepatitis A include jaundice, pain in the abdomen, low appetite, fever, nausea, diarrhea, and fatigue.
- Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is a serious type and sometimes chronic liver infection which can cause scarring of the organ, liver failure, or even death if left untreated. It’s typically acquired through unprotected sex with someone who has it, sharing needles, an accidental needle stick, or from a mother who is infected while giving birth. Symptoms of hepatitis B are similar to hepatitis A, and like hepatitis A, many do not experience any symptoms.
- Hepatitis C: Hepatitis C is very common, with an estimated 71 million people globally who have a chronic hepatitis C infection. It is the most common cause of liver disease in the U.S. and the main reason for liver transplants. The vast majority of people who become infected with hepatitis C develop chronic infections. Hepatitis C also rarely shows symptoms, but if it does, they are similar to other types of hepatitis.
