Methaqualone was formerly marketed as a sedative and hypnotic under the brand name Quaalude in the U.S., but is no prescribed since abuse potential exists due to its euphoric properties.

Methaqualone acts similarly to barbiturates and causes euphoria, light sedation or sleep. High doses may cause seizures. Methaqualone has a potential for addiction and abuse, and is listed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency as a Schedule I drug, even though it was once widely prescribed as medication.
