Potassium, Urine Test

Our potassium urine test is used to help diagnose aldosteronism. The excretion of potassium in urine is increased in primary aldosteronism. Primary aldosteronism, also known as primary hyperaldosteronism or Conn's syndrome, is a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive amounts of the hormone aldosterone, resulting in low renin levels.

Levels of potassium in urine are often increased if an individual is dehydrated or in instances of salicylate toxicity. Decreased potassium urine levels may be seen in malabsorption conditions like celiac disease or Crohn's disease and may suggest hypokalemia.
